Fushigi Yugi Genbu Kaiden

I have watched Fushigi Yugi (FY), through all except Ova. I would say that Genbu Kaiden has a maturity that FY doesn't. That is to be expected, and it is much appreciated. Mangaka Yuu Watase is no newbie at her art, and it shows in Genbu Kaiden.

There are definitely "mature" ideas in it, but in spite of some questionable material, the characters are just as, or more, loveable than those from Fushigi Yugi. The priestess, Takiko, is more demure and ladylike, and it's easier to see why Uruki falls for her.

Even though we know the characters and their story in a small amount from FY, the question remains if the story is the same because time seems rather elastic. Probably a silly notion, because FY is already written, and the writer is, presumably, unable to travel through time, but within the story, I think it's possible that some changes may occur to depart from what we know in FY.

I'm gonna have to review.

Anyway, for literary style and art, Yuu Watase remains the best in the business.
